Nannari syrup is one of the most celebrated traditional summer cooler drinks of Tamil Nadu, loved for its naturally refreshing and cooling properties. During summer, it tastes incredibly delicious when mixed with chilled soda, often reminding many people of a herbal version of root beer.

The syrup can also be added to warm milk as a flavoring ingredient, while the roots can be brewed into tea that tastes comforting when served hot.

In Ayurveda, nannari is considered an important herb known for helping calm the Pitta dosha. It is traditionally used to ease acidity, fever, diarrhea, dysentery and general body heat while also supporting immunity and reducing fatigue. Since it has strong cooling properties, it is best consumed mindfully during colder seasons.

    WHAT IS NANNARI?

“Nannari” in English is called “Indian sarsaparilla.” Another scientific name is Hemidesmus indicus. most widely used in parts of South India. Tamil Nadu is famous for Nongu sharbat, aka ice apple drink.

    MEDICINAL BENEFITS:

The medical properties of Nannari’s roots include blood purification, relief from acidity and constipation, and both. Additionally, it works well for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, anemia, urinary issues, and inflammations of the liver and spleen.

METHOD TO PREPARE AN AMAZING DRINK:

First, get a juice shaker. Take a glass of normal water. Add chilled nannari syrup to it. As it is already sweetened, we won’t require any sugar. Squeeze half a lemon juice. Shake well and pour it into the serving glass.

The best part of nannari is to have it with ice apple (nongu). In our native, we call it “nongu sharbat,” which is very popular among any of the corner stalls. The ice apple should be tender, juicy and jelly.

Add the desired amount to the juice. Place a fresh basil on top.  Get that tropical vibe and enjoy!

I’m sure you will definitely love this recipe. There are two major flavors widely available: one is red in color and the other is yellow.
