Time management : How I Balance Work, Home and Motherhood
How I Balance
Work, Home & Homeschooling
as a Mother
Balancing different roles in life is something every woman learns gradually with time. There is no perfect formula for it, and every family finds its own rhythm. For me, balancing my responsibilities as a mother, managing my home, and continuing my work has been a journey of learning, patience, and constant adjustment.
Over the years, I slowly developed a routine that allows me to give attention to my home, my daughter’s education, and my professional work. It is not about doing everything perfectly every day but about organizing life in a way that keeps things moving smoothly.
Below is how I manage different aspects of my day.
1. Managing My Home and Household Responsibilities
Running a home may look simple from the outside, but it involves many small tasks that keep the house functioning comfortably for everyone. However, all households have common tasks that require attention, such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. And how they allocate their time for each task is all about saving time and energy.
Kitchen Management (10 mins)
The kitchen is the heart of my home, and most of my day begins here. I make sure the pantry is organized, ingredients are stocked, and the cooking space stays clean and functional. The dishes are loaded on time, and the kitchen is clean and ready for me to begin my work. A well-managed kitchen makes daily cooking easier and less stressful.
Cooking (30 mins)
Cooking fresh meals for my family is something I enjoy doing. I try to prepare healthy and simple dishes while also experimenting with new recipes from time to time. Preparing meals at home gives me control over what we eat and keeps our lifestyle healthier.
Meal Planning
Planning meals in advance saves a lot of time and energy. It also helps me make better grocery decisions and ensures that our meals remain balanced and nutritious. Being a South Indian, my kitchen becomes too heavy for a day to manage our cravings for South Indian cuisine. I enjoy exploring pan-Asian cuisine, comforting Indian food, and foods that take less than 15 minutes to prepare while maintaining the highest level of nutrition. My family enjoys the food I cook and serve, and I believe there is always energy produced by someone cooking to serve the one who is irreplaceable.
House Cleaning (30 mins)
Daily cleaning is part of maintaining a peaceful living space. I usually take care of sweeping and mopping the floors, making sure the house stays tidy and comfortable to live in.
Dusting (15 mins)
Dusting is done whenever required to keep furniture and surfaces clean. A clean environment always helps in creating a calm and positive atmosphere inside the home. With my daughter suffering allergies due to environmental triggers, it becomes my most important duty among the household chores to keep my home environment suitable for her good health.
Baking Goodies (occasional—30 mins preparing)
Whenever I get time, I enjoy baking small treats for my family. Baking has always been a relaxing activity for me, and it brings a little joy to our everyday routine.
Cleaning Washrooms (occasional—20 mins)
Washrooms require regular maintenance to stay hygienic. I make sure they are cleaned occasionally or whenever they start getting dirty. At the same time, cleanliness also has a strong impact on our mental comfort. Walking into a neat, fresh washroom instantly creates a sense of calm and order. When every corner of the home is cared for, even the small spaces like washrooms contribute to a positive atmosphere, making the home feel more peaceful and pleasant to live in
Watering Plants (5 mins)
Plants bring life and freshness into my home. Taking care of them by watering and maintaining them is a small but satisfying part of my daily routine. Due to my hectic schedule, I am unable to maintain a large plant collection these days, but I have significantly improved my planting routine by combining 6-8 plants in the same container, resulting in an overall pot of 5-6 plants that can fit on a tabletop on my balcony and require less maintenance. In this way, I have varieties of plants sharing common containers.
Laundry (10 mins)
Laundry is another regular responsibility that needs attention throughout the week. Keeping clothes washed, dried, and organized helps maintain order in the household. I segregate laundry so that clothes in my family go into the washing machine in turn. like if i have to put my daughter’s clothes into laundry then that particular day goes into only washing her clothes, drying them under sun, folding themand arranging in the closet. Similarly, I do it for myself and my husband. This way, I have set days to do laundry at home, which saves me time and energy while also giving me space to think about other things.
Home Improvement, DIY and Decor (30 mins)
I also enjoy working on small home improvement ideas, DIY projects, and decor arrangements. These little changes help keep the home lively and reflect our personal style. So, if I start a decor project for my home, it will take days to complete because I set a time limit for each day to ensure that my other activities do not interfere. The completion brings great satisfaction. The patience that I am learning and the skills that are developing with me are both very beautiful aspects of my life. Furthermore, it is more special for me to see my daughter developing her interest and contributing assistance while I am doing some DIY or decorating for our home.
2 hours 10 minutes, or no more than 2 hours 30 minutes,
is all I need in a day to care for my home and family.
2. My Work
At present, I continue to stay connected with my profession by working as a freelancer. However, I do not dedicate as much time to it as I used to, mainly mainly due to time constraints – the demanding nature of my work earlier brought certain health challenges and also because my priorities at home require more of my attention now. For the time being, I prefer doing work that balances my knowledge, time, and personal interests while still allowing me to earn a decent income and stay professionally active.
Alongside managing my home, I also work as a lifestyle Author currently through my personal platform. My husband serves as my support on this new journey in my life, providing me with exceptional technical assistance around the clock, and he also offers a significant sense of relief in securing my platform.
My blog focuses on topics related to everyday life—including parenting, travel experiences, home decor ideas, traditions, lifestyle tips, and personal reflections. Writing articles allows me to document experiences and share insights that might be useful or relatable to others.
Blogging requires planning content, writing articles, editing images, organizing posts, and publishing them regularly. It is a strategic work that demands creativity and consistency, but it also gives me the flexibility to work from home while continuing to pursue something I genuinely enjoy.
While I am not looking after my home and household chores or spending time with my daughter, I am completely focused on my work, which takes up approximately 7-8 hours per day.
3. My Role as a Homeschooler Mother
Another important part of my day is homeschooling my daughter, which takes me an hour each day. My daughter is a quick learner, so we sometimes cover two academic subjects in this time frame. Otherwise, our little learner is inquisitive and continues to pile up her questions, making it no less than a research project for me to be able to provide her with answers while remaining available at her beck and call.
I personally guide her through subjects such as mathematics, English, grammar, science, social science, environmental studies (EVS), general knowledge, and arts & crafts.
To make learning engaging, I use worksheets available online and sometimes customize worksheets based on her interests before printing them for practice. This allows me to adjust the learning pace and teaching method according to her comfort and curiosity.
Learning Through Exploration
Homeschooling for us is not limited to textbooks. We also take regular trips and small outings where she can observe and understand the world around her. These experiences help children learn naturally through real-life exposure.
Learning New Languages
Depending on her interests, I also get help from online resources that introduce her to different international languages. This helps expand her curiosity and understanding of the world.
Online Learning Activities
Apart from academic subjects, she also participates in various online lessons through Google Meet, which helps her develop creativity, discipline, and confidence. She participates in workshops that are relevant to her interests. My daughter is an avid art and craft enthusiast, so she regularly spends time with her imagination and creations.
Playtime
I accompany her during her playtime, covering up my walking routine while my daughter socializes and learns about her surroundings.
Finding Balance in the Day
Managing all these responsibilities becomes possible because I divide my day into dedicated zones of time. Each part of the day is allocated for different activities — household tasks, homeschooling, professional work, and personal time. My workdays follow a set schedule, while weekends are mostly based on previously planned appointments.
Equally important is making space for myself. In between these responsibilities, I try to spend time doing things that help me grow as an individual — learning new ideas, exploring my interests, and surrounding myself with positive people.
Life as a mother, homemaker, and working professional is certainly demanding, but when approached with patience and balance, it can also be deeply fulfilling.
Every day may not go exactly as planned, but the effort to keep moving forward with clarity and gratitude is what truly makes the journey meaningful.
So where is the time for all these?
Waking up early helps me begin the day with clarity.
Taking a few quiet moments to relax and think about the day ahead sets the tone for everything that follows.
Praying to God becomes my form of meditation.
Engaging in household work becomes my daily physical activity.
Spending time with my daughter is my greatest responsibility.
The work I do today is my passion.
Spending time with positive people around me towards the end of the day acts as a stress reliever.
And in between all these, there is always cooking done with love.
Willing to do my best for my home, my family, my life and the profession i do is simply who I am.
That’s all.
If you are able to find your own way, you have already won half the battle in life.
