Following India’s independence, the Telugu and Malayalam regions of Madras state were divided from Tamilagam state in 1956, leading to its renaming as Tamil Nadu on January 14, 1969, by the state government.
The province was designated as Madras State after the Constitution of India was adopted on 26 January 1950. In 1953, the state underwent a division and was reorganized again in 1956. Subsequently, on 14 January 1969, Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu.

So that’s how Tamil Nadu was formed.
“Tamil meaning Language, Nadu meaning land.”
The rich and varied cultures of Tamil Nadu itself are truly fascinating and charming, making them impossible to resist.
When discussing South Indian cuisine, you’ll discover that each town within a state offers its own unique recipe variations. Every palate has its own distinct preferences. The most celebrated Tamil Nadu dishes originate from regions like Nellai, Madurai, Chettinadu, and Karaikudi, among others. If you seek out restaurants that focus on this cuisine, I can guarantee that you will absolutely fall in love with Tamil Nadu’s culinary delights.
What makes Tamil cuisine unique is its abundance of healthy, nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial ingredients that we consume daily. Ingredients such as black pepper, cumin seeds, coriander, and mint leaves, along with spices and condiments from the South, are loaded with immunity-boosting properties. The way we prepare our vegetables, often not allowing them to cook over a long period, along with coconut, shallots, curry leaves, ginger, and garlic, are truly blessings passed down from the ancestors of Tamil Nadu.
For those of you reading my blog, if you’re considering a trip to Chennai, Tamil Nadu, here’s a list of restaurants we visited that delighted our taste buds.

Anjappar restaurant is located in various regions of Tamil Nadu and is renowned for its vegetarian full-course meal. They provide an extensive selection of Chettinad dishes. Their Kuska biryani is among my favorites. Children will absolutely adore it. The prices are very reasonable, yet the portion sizes are unmatched.
5. Nandhana Palace – Andhra Style Restaurant
This restaurant offers a wide range of South indian mainly andhra style recipes and North Indian dishes as well. One thali covers mostly all the tastes you are searching for. The chicken varieties are very tasty here. The veg sautéed vegetables and drumstick soups are very yum. Affordable, but hygiene should be improved.

- The main point about all the restaurants I mentioned is that they stop serving breakfast at 10 AM. Lunch is concluded by 3:30 PM, and for dinner, most of the restaurants provide only a tiffin menu or options like North Indian and Chinese cuisine.
- Also after having had meal from these i noticed there is not gastric or acidity issues noticed making me believe that the food was prepared fresh and use of fresh oil was done.
