INTRODUCTION

Lonavala is one of the most loved weekend getaways for families, especially when traveling with kids. From scenic waterfalls and misty hills to fun parks and relaxing weather, this hill station offers the perfect mix of nature and entertainment for children and parents alike.

But travelling with kids also needs smart planning —

  •  Choosing the right sightseeing spots
  •  Avoiding long travel hours,
  • Carrying essentials & not making the travel heavy,
  • Balancing fun with rest.

WHERE IS LONAVALA LOCATED & HOW TO REACH

Lonavala is a beautiful hill station located between Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra. It’s one of our favorite quick family getaway spots because the weather, greenery and peaceful vibe make it perfect for traveling with kids.

You can easily reach Lonavala by road, train or bus. From Mumbai, it takes around 2–3 hours by car through the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Trains are also convenient and comfortable if traveling with children.

  • Local train—Budget-friendly and easy if traveling from the Mumbai side till the Karjat/Khopoli route.
  • Express trains—like Deccan Queen, Intercity Express, Pragati Express and other Mumbai–Pune trains that stop at Lonavala.
  • Vistadome coach trains—These are the scenic glass-window trains people take mainly for the beautiful ghat views during monsoon.
In this guide I’ll share some easy tips from my experience on how to plan a smooth, fun and memorable sightseeing trip in Lonavala with your little ones.

BEST TIME TO VISIT LONAVALA WITH KIDS

The best time to visit Lonavala with kids is during monsoon and winter. From June to September, the hills turn beautifully green with waterfalls everywhere, making the drive and sightseeing feel magical. But since it can get slippery and crowded during heavy rains, traveling with very small children may need a little extra planning.

If you prefer pleasant weather with easier sightseeing, October to February is perfect. The climate feels cool, comfortable and ideal for outdoor activities, nature walks and family outings.

THINGS TO PACK WHEN TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN

When traveling to Lonavala with children, packing a few essentials beforehand makes the trip much smoother and stress-free.

  1. Carry comfortable clothes that can keep you warm and airy depending on the season, and an extra pair of outfits in your handbag always during sightseeing.
  2. Light jackets for the cool weather, earmuffs, socks, and anti-skid footwear.
  3. Light snacks, water bottles and basic medicines like painkillers, antiemetics, and allergy medicines in a handbag.
  4. If visiting during monsoon, raincoats are preferred for kids & adults so we can hold them easily.
  5. Extra footwear is definitely helpful. Sometimes the shoes get terribly wet, so kids begin to get cranky. Carrying them in hand will not always be easy.

We also make sure to carry small entertainment items, chargers, wet wipes and tissues because they end up being useful throughout the journey.

KID-FRIENDLY PLACES TO VISIT IN LONAVALA

Lonavala has many family-friendly places where children can enjoy nature, open spaces and fun activities at the same time. Some of the popular spots include

  • Bhushi Dam

At Bhushi Dam, children and adults mostly enjoy spending time near the flowing water, relaxing on the steps and simply enjoying the cool weather and greenery around. During monsoon, the water flowing over the steps becomes the main attraction and makes the whole place feel lively and refreshing.

It’s more about enjoying the experience, taking photos, having snacks nearby and spending relaxed family time in nature rather than doing too many activities. You can also do some ceramic shopping nearby.

  • Pawna Lake

At Pawna Lake, we spent time simply slowing down and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere together as a family. The weather, lake view and surrounding hills made the whole place feel very calm and refreshing. We enjoyed boating, taking pictures, watching the sunset and just sitting quietly for some time away from the usual city rush.

Watching my daughter play with stones and pebbles, building a tiny fort and pretending to cook with them felt so simple yet special. It is one of those little memories from the trip that will stay with us for a long time.

  • Sunil’s Wax museum

Sunil’s Celebrity Wax Museum was a fun and interesting stop for our family, especially for the kids. Seeing realistic wax statues of celebrities, movie characters, sports personalities and famous figures made the whole experience exciting and entertaining.

We spent time taking lots of pictures and simply enjoying the playful atmosphere inside. Sunil’s Celebrity Wax Museum was a fun and interesting stop for our family, especially for the kids. My daughter was excited seeing the cartoon characters and happily kept identifying popular personalities like Rajinikanth, J. Jayalalithaa, Queen Elizabeth II, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Watching her recognize and talk about them made the visit even more enjoyable and memorable for us as parents.

  • Kinara Village Dhaba

Kinara Village Dhaba was one of the places where we stopped for food during our trip. The village-style setup, greenery and open atmosphere made the whole experience feel relaxing and family-friendly.

My daughter especially enjoyed watching the birds and animals around the place like rabbits, ducks, parrots, white pigeons, geese, turkeys, roosters, hens, buffalo, cows, horses, camels, donkeys, oxen, dogs, cats, squirrel and fish. It made the visit feel more interactive and enjoyable for children rather than just being a regular food stop.

  • Shree Narayani Dham temple

If you are spiritual and believe in God, Shree Narayani Dham is a peaceful place to visit in Lonavala. The temple is mainly dedicated to Goddess Narayani and has a very calm and positive atmosphere.

I personally feel temples, no matter which religion they belong to, carry a different kind of vibration and peace that makes you pause for a moment and simply feel lighter within.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR PARENTS

When traveling with children, we realized keeping the plan relaxed instead of rushing through too many places makes the trip much more enjoyable. Carrying snacks, water, extra clothes and basic medicines really helps during long outings and unexpected weather changes.

One thing I personally feel is that, as parents, we sometimes forget children may not enjoy or handle the same energy levels as us. Slowly, we end up pushing them while getting busy in our own excitement and fun. But family trips should not feel exhausting for anyone. Everyone, especially children, should get time to enjoy at their own pace.

That is also one reason why we mostly avoid traveling in big groups because it often becomes too rushed, and we prefer slower, calmer trips where everyone can genuinely enjoy the experience together.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I feel trips with children become beautiful when we stop rushing and simply allow everyone to enjoy the journey at their own pace. Sometimes the calmest and most unplanned moments end up becoming the happiest memories.

Not Every Sightseeing Spot
Needs to Be Covered

Every trip we take is like those simple, memorable family trips where the little moments are the ones we remember the most. More than covering many places, we enjoyed slowing down, spending time together and watching our daughter enjoy the experience in her own small ways.

Although Lonavala has more than 30 sightseeing spots, I personally feel not everything is truly worth covering. At the end of the day, it completely depends on how each person wants to experience a trip.

For us, a good family vacation is not about rushing from one place to another just to tick locations off a list. We enjoyed having enough leisure time at the resort, indoor activities, outdoor play, peaceful morning walks in the sun while exploring the landscape around us, relaxed meal times at restaurants or the in-house dining space, and limiting sightseeing to just one or two places a day.

A slow 3–4 day staycation like this felt far more meaningful, relaxing and memorable for our family. If a trip cannot give us time to pause, breathe and genuinely enjoy together, then what more can we really ask from a vacation?
